St Louis Post Dispatch

From a Special Correspondent of the Post-Dispatch. ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., March 23.

If the diamond dries out and the mercury climbs a few pegs in the thermometer, the Cardinals and Athletics will clash on the local field today. It is Manager Huggins intention to send Hank Robinson, the Piratical southpaw, against the world’s champions, while Chief Bender, the eminent Chippewa, probably will hurl for the Athletics. Robinson will go the full route if he is at all effective, as the big southpaw is slated to antagonize the Browns, and Hug wants to give him a good workout.

Most of the Cardinal regulars are in shape for a stiff tiff with the Mackmen today. Jack Miller will return to his berth at first after taking a flier at shortstopping, as Artie Butler’s busted finger has mended and he’s ready to earn his salary. Whitted will show at third, with Huggins or Dolan on second Wingo will be paired with Robinson, with Magee, Cather and Wilson in the outfield.

Cold Weather Worries Players.

The Cardinals were idle yesterday and likewise on Saturday. The weather for these two days has been anything but favorable and a few of the players complain of sore joints although they all expect to round to if given a good workout this afternoon.

Hug has announced no releases as yet, although he has such a small squad that he need not worry about reducing his list. He has five catchers – Wingo, Snyder, O’Connor, Roche and Glenn and probably will get rid of at least one before the championship season opens. Either Glenn or Roche will feel the guillotine’s ax. Of the 10 pitchers, Hug will keep all for the present, but may reduce his squad to eight when the big season opens. The eight tipped to remain are: Sallee, Steele, Perritt, Doak. Hagerman, Griner, Niehaus and Robinson.

Charley Miller is the only extra outfielder, while Beck and Dolan are the unplaced infielders. Hug has but 28 players, making it easy for him to get within the prescribed limit of 25 when the proper time comes.

Rickey to Send Recruits Against Cards, Saturday

After a month of intensive training in St. Petersburg, Fla., the Browns today are migrating northward for their annual tail-end championship with the Cardinals. A squad of 38 players is now under Rickey’s command, but at least 10 of this number will be dropped en route.

The announcement that Rickey would use several second-string men in the pre-season series with the Cardinals, proved an interesting bit ot news for the local fans Monday. It has been unofficially but reliably stated that the Browns’ infield will be manned by Howard or Leary at first; Miller at Second; Bisland at short, and Austin at third with Messenger, Rumler and Earnst Walker in the outfield when the spring series opens. This will give the St. Louis fans a chance to see what the kids amount to and incidentally will indicate who’s who on Rickey’s squad.

The first squad of Brownies will reach here Thursday and will be reinforced with a second detachment Friday morning. The series will open Saturday at Sportsman’s Park.

INDIANAPOLIS TRAINER TO WORK FOR CARDINALS

AI Woods, for several years a trainer with the St. Paul and Indianapolis (A. A.) clubs, has been hired by Manager Huggins of the Cardinals on the recommendation of Mike Kelley, who bossed the Saints and Hoosiers when Woods did the masseur work. Woods reported in St. Louis Monday and will be waiting for Huggins when the Cards return Thursday.
