Ode To Doak
By L. C. Davis
THERE was a young fellow named Doak,
Whom the Phillies considered a joke;
But little friend Willy
Made Philly look silly.
And now they hope Willy will choke.
From Wray’s Column… One stolen base was credited to the Phillies and that must be charged to Willie Doak, not Snyder. Doak serves a spitball which Is hard to handle but there were other complications when Byrne bolted for second. His pitch was low and Snyder didn’t have a chance. Frank flagged Paskert by a beautiful peg in the third.
Butler on the Job.
Artie Butler delivered his first pinch hit in weeks Wednesday, when he drove Huggins home with the first run in the fourth inning. Then Wingo, reformed into an outfielder, rammed through a single that scored Butler and put the Cards on their feet. All the while Willie Doak pitched a bang-up game, while Dan Griner, who worked the last two innings after a pinch hitter had swung for Doak, was absolute master of the situation.
All the Cardinals now need is a little spirit. If Manager Huggins can inspire his men with some aggressiveness and keep them hustling, they should have a prosperous stand against the East and climb ahead of the Phillies before another 10 days. The Cards absolutely belong higher up than Dooin’s five-man pitching staff.
