February 28, 1914              Age 23

SPECIAL DISPATCH,  St Louis Globe Democrat Sun

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA.. February 28.    Arnold Hauser, who has been in bad condition even before the Cardinal squad reached here, has removed to the Railroad Hospital tonight while word is being awaited from his people up North.

Hauser has taken part in the practice for the last two days, but the rain kept him in and he began to wander about the hotel addressing people and acting strangely. He refused to eat and showed signs of being in bad shape. In order to give him the attention he needed he was taken to the hospital.

Secretary Seekamp is expected here in the morning and it is probable one of Hauser’s relatives will be with him and take Arnold home. When he gets there an effort will be made to find out just how serious his illness is and what chances there are for his recovery.

Hauser came on here ahead of the squad in order to gain strength after an attack of pneumonia during the winter. The change failed to have the desired effect, but when the other players arrived here he brightened up.

{Editor’s note: Hauser was cut from the Cardinals and sat out the 1914 season. In 1915 he played in 23 games for the Chicago Whales of the Federal League, batting only .204, thus ending his career at age 26.}
