Bill Doak was setting the Reds down all the way with calm, collected precision. The score was 1-0.
Fine Game for Doak.
Doak never looked better. He walked but three men and one of these passes was purposely given – that to Wingo in the second. This filled the corner with two down and brought up Mitchell, whom Doak promptly fanned. Only six hits were made off the big blond, scattered over four inning, and all singles. The Cards gathered eleven off Mitchell, Lavan’s double being the only extra baser. Doak also fanned five men, getting Mitchell three times in a row and mowing down Jim Smith on strikes in the second and last innings. The Cards had two pretty double plays, one being Doak to Lavan to Miller, and the other Hornsby to Stock to Miller. The only boot in the game was a fumble by Hornsby on Rath, the first batter of the game. It did no damage, however.
Cards Going Well
With four games won of the seven played since returning from the east, the Cardinals are due to climb. Just now they are in the cellar by but half a game, and a win today while Boston loses would move them out. Once on the upward way to glory, they should surely continue the motion They are getting good pitching now and no one could ever be so wide of the mark as to say they cannot hit. With an even break of fortune, watch ‘em go.
