Chilly Sauce by Chilly Doyle                Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

In the humble appeal of the Salvation Army there is an unmeasured force and unfathomed depth. This truth was best exemplified to hungry Yanks by the army’s workers as they passed out doughnuts in France.

The Salvation Army of Pittsburgh will give a treat to the children tomorrow afternoon in the Court House. Among other gifts will be baseballs and bats.

Adjt. Cornelius J. Hickey, who was one of the army’s servants on the other side, wished to make the baseball treat more impressive by having the balls and bats distributed by star ball players of the Pittsburgh district. Hickey knows what the average kid thinks about ball players and wanted to have some of the players autograph the balls.

The Adjutant was not acquainted with the players who make their homes here and in the characteristic humility of the army, he was wondering if a half dozen of the boys could be stirred into action.

The army, in yesterday’s issue of The Gazette Times, asked six players to assist. They were requested to call this paper by phone yesterday afternoon. Every mother’s son of them saw the notice and several of them were trying to use the phone at the same time, to offer their services. The players who will distribute and autograph the gifts are as follows: Bill McKechnie, Joe Schepner, Louisville; Ed Harney, Buffalo; Bill Doak, St. Louis Cardinals: Jimmy Smith, Philadelphia Nationals, and John Miljus, Brooklyn. All are residents of Pittsburgh.

The six players will meet Adjt. Hickey at The Gazette Times Sports Department tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock. The Christmas scene will take place in room 101 of the Court House one hour later. And it will be some scene, with gifts of all sorts for children of all sizes.
