Spring Training, St. Louis Browns February 29, 1916
By J. B. Sheridan St Louis Globe Democrat Sun
Palestine, Tex., February 29. The Browns got into the promised land at high noon. Jones had them on the ball field as soon as possible. He gave them an hour’s work.
Austin was there with the usual cayenne. Ward Miller grabbed a few in midsummer style. The others limbered up charily. The team lives at the Redlands Hotel, dresses at the railroad Y.M.C.A, and practices at a brand new, grassless, red clay park built by the citizens for honorable Mr. Ball, who is a lion in these parts. Mr. Ball owns some 75,000 acres of first-class farming, timber, oil, etc. in and about Palestine.
The night ride hither was very pleasant. Messrs. B. F. Bush, Charles Stone, James E. Davenport, John Kearney and James Wilkes Booth of the Iron Mountain Railroad, did their prettiest. The Sunshine Special made good. It was snowing in St. Louis when the team left. The sun shone warmly in Palestine. The dining-car service was admirable. The chicken was rather rubbery, the au gratin potatoes not so much, but the strawberries and ice cream were delicious.
The players destroyed the Brownsville strawberry crop at one fell swoop. Mr. Williams, superintendent of dining service, gave Mr. Jones a very grand cake, which G. Baumgardner ate in a moment of aberration.
Sleep was somewhat spoiled by a clanking between the two cars. This will no doubt be fixed so soon as the cars get to St Louis. and Messrs. Bush, Stone, Davenport. Kearney and Booth “get out and get under.”
Hamilton got on at Long View, coming from that dear Oswego, Kan. Ham looks very nice, Norfolk coat, quite the beau of the bunch.
Dr. Martin Pike Lawler, trainer of the Browns. met the tourists at the depot. Dr. Lawler is a big man in Palestine. The citizens’ committee, headed by Hyman Pearlstone and a band, showed the route to the Redlands, quite an up-to-date hotel. The players are much taken with the accommodations.
The usual assault in force and the dining room was captured and then securely held by our gallant troops, led by Lieut. Baumgardner.
Dr. Lawler turned on the promised sunshine, made the magnolias bloom and the oleanders blossom. Palestine made good “fust shot out of the box.”
Ham’s Trunk Gets Lost.
Hamilton did not practice – his trunk had miscarried. Davenport got in at 5:30 with his new wife. This means that David is ready to sign at Jones’ terms.
Clemons made a favorable impressions. He is very like Spencer, who was the star catcher of the 1908 Browns. He is not so large or fat as Spencer, a good-looking, polished, perfumed, particular person.
Phillips is a big blonde, good looking, like Doak, but much heavier. Phillips and Clemons will make the handsomest battery in baseball. Fencher, the Little Rock recruit, is big and boney. Paulette is a blonde boy, a nice-looking athlete.
