PHILADELPHIA, June I8.  After winning six straight games, the Cardinals came to grief here yesterday in a stirring 10-inning battle, 5 4. Willie Doak opposed Grover Cleveland Alexander at the start of hostilities but neither pitcher finished and when the final returns were made the defeat was charged to Sallee while the victory went to Erskine Mayer, who worked in Tuesday’s game.

The absence of Manager Huggins probably contributed to the downfall of the Cardinals although the St. Louis entry played a snappy game from the tap of the bell. The hitting of Sherwood Nottingham Magee was the big feature of the game. He combed four hits, each a double and drove in all the locals’ runs, including that decisive tally in the tenth. Magee hit the ball in the bleachers for a home run in this round but was credited only with a double as that was sufficient to win.
