PHILADELPHIA,  Sept. 22  – Bill Doak, the pitching prize of the National League, momentarily at least checked the backward slide of the Cardinals yesterday by defeating the Phillies, 6-3, in 10 innings. Doak held the enemy to a tie, 3-3, for nine frames, but in the first half of the tenth, after the Cards had scored a pair of runs, he was taken out to let a pinch hitter swing. Three runs were made and Perritt finished up, but Doak gets credit for the victory.

It was Willie’s twentieth {sic – later adjusted to 18 wins, at this point in season, per baseball-reference} conquest of the season and put him ahead of Bill James, the Braves’ star.  However, if James wins this afternoon, Doak will again be relegated to second place.

Doak Being Overworked.

Doak worked yesterday although he had not been given sufficient rest since his l2-inning duel with James last Friday. However, the Cards had lost four straight and Hug was in desperate straits.  So he beckoned for Bill, and the Akronite Blond delivered as usual.  He broke the Phils’ winning streak, which had grown to a total of eight games.

The Cards now are six full games ahead of Philadelphia, and reasonably certain of finishing the season in first division. They are only one-half a game behind the Cubs, and still have a fighting chance for third place, a position that may be fought for at St. Louis when the Cubs and Cards return there for a six-game series late in September.
